FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about HR certification.

Which certification should I start with?

If you have no HR experience, start with the aPHR (HRCI) or the SHRM-CP (SHRM). If you do day-to-day HR work, the PHR or SHRM-CP fit best. Senior HR leaders usually target the SPHR or SHRM-SCP.

How long does it take to prepare for an HR certification exam?

Most candidates study for 8 to 12 weeks with a structured plan that includes timed practice exams.

aPHR vs SHRM-CP: which entry credential is better?

Neither is better in general. The aPHR is HRCI’s knowledge-based entry credential; the SHRM-CP focuses on HR competencies and situational judgment.

Do I need HR experience to get certified?

Not for the aPHR or the SHRM-CP. The PHR, SPHR, and SHRM-SCP require professional-level or strategic HR experience.

Are prep programs worth it?

A prep program is worth it if you will actually work through the practice assessments — that is where most of the value comes from.
